Neuropsychiatry

Neuropsychiatry brings together the science of Neurology and Psychiatry and addresses the overlap between these two specialties in medicine.  They both originate in the same organ- the brain. It is a branch of medicine that studies and treats disorders of the brain that can cause physical, cognitive, motivational, emotional and behavioral dysfunction.  

At Advanced Neuropsychiatric Specialists we are dedicated to finding the underlying cause that contributes to the symptoms that present in our patients.  This involves a functional medicine approach in which it is essential to recognize that the body functions through homeostatic balance- each system of the body directly interacts with others and when one system becomes damaged or fails it can have consequences that affect the operation of all body systems.  When a “symptom” is noted by a patient it is essential that medicine asks the simple question “why”?  Why is this occurring? Once the underlying etiology is addressed or managed– this allows the symptom to improve or resolve.  Unfortunately, medicine today practices a “symptomatic” approach- aka if you have a symptom you receive a pill for it.  This usually does little for the underlying issue which will continue to fester until it is addressed. 

Our goal for our patients is to find and address the underlying etiology that is contributing to the symptom- that may involve different types of testing, including labs and imaging studies, and treatment with supplements, pharmaceuticals, IV nutritional therapy or even hyperbaric oxygen therapy.  The goal is for our patients to succeed!
